An interview with Dawn De Braal
What is, in your opinion, the best thing (or your favourite thing) that you’ve ever written? Tell us about it.
The truth? I don’t know that it’s happened yet. At the time of writing it, everything I write is my favourite. I enjoyed a series of horror stories written to the lines of the Lord’s Prayer, and also a series of short stories written to the Beatitudes, with my favourite “Blessed Are Those Who Mourn.” I am still working on that series.
Who are your favourite writers, and what influences your writing?
I am not a scholar, I enjoy authors that have written good stories and not particularly famous as yet. I did read a lot of Stephen King and Dean Koontz, and a whole host of unknown authors. It’s sad that people buy the best-sellers overlooking lesser known, equally talented authors. Everyday life influences my writing. When something interests me, something some one says, or a gesture I’ve seen I feel the urge to write about it.
What are your hobbies?
I used to write songs and play keyboard, guitar and autoharp. Since the pandemic, I don’t get to jam with my friends anymore, and my interest in writing surfaced. Writing is very a individual thing to do, meaning you do it by yourself and it’s kept me sane… sort of.
Describe yourself as if you are a character in one of your own stories / poems.
“She’s a bit odd, don’t you think?”
“How so?”
“She keeps to herself, and stares at us like we are interesting somehow.”
“Perhaps she is writing about us!”
Dawn’s fingers flew across the keyboard as she caught the entire conversation. Oh yes, they were subjects in her next story, and something would happen to them. She would study them to discover their weaknesses and build the story around their characters.
Tell us something crazy.
I have published 472 stories, drabbles, poems, and co-authored a book since I started writing in Dec 2018. I can be a bit obsessive.
What’s the weirdest question you’ve ever been asked in an interview? And what did you answer?
I don’t think there is a weirdest question to date. When I get one, I’ll let you know!
What is your writing set-up? (E.g. your garden shed, a café etc.) and are there any things you must have to get the words to flow, e.g. a lucky hat or a favourite shirt?
I do not have an office. I sit with a laptop computer in my lap and write where I am. I don’t have goals or a certain amount of words I have to produce a day like some authors. This is my hobby and I love telling stories. No one is safe around me if I know you!
