An interview with
Pat Hull
What is, in your opinion, the best thing (or your favourite thing) that you’ve ever written? Tell us about it.
I wrote a piece called “Chicken Parm the Movie’” that sticks with me. It was about a life changing depression I had in my early twenties. Especially now, with mental health finally gaining priority, I sometimes go back to this piece for a reminder to take care of myself.
Who are your favourite writers, and what influences your writing?
I love David Foster Wallace, Charles Bukowski, Gary Young, Stephen Jenkinson. Dreams influence my writing. My childhood and dysfunctional family keeps me writing and discovering missing pieces of myself.
What are your hobbies?
Every morning, my son and I hop on razor scooters with our white lab named Lupin. We scoot to the park and do basketball drills. Lupin roams the park off leash and befriends everything. He met the neighbor’s tortoise the other day, named Tobias. The tortoise absolutely despises Lupin.
I cook, read, write, and play music in my spare time. I teach public speaking and non-violent communication at CSU, Chico and Butte College.
Describe yourself as if you are a character in one of your own stories / poems.
His feet were born clubbed so he overcompensates with a go-getter, you can overcome anything attitude that is inviting at first, then suspicious, and eventually, completely off putting. He wants to talk about religion but nobody seems to “want to go there.” He has had “volunteer at Hospice” on his calendar since the start of the pandemic, but he’s going to call today.
Tell us something crazy.
We are not taking the climate crisis seriously.
What’s the weirdest question you’ve ever been asked in an interview? And what did you answer?
I was asked in a music interview who I was trying to sound like! And I said next question.
What is your writing set-up? (E.g your garden shed, a cafe etc) and are there any things you must have to get the words to flow, e.g a lucky hat or a favourite shirt?
I don’t have a routine or a writing set up. I write erratically and at unpredictable moments. I have lots of order in my life being a dad and a teacher and part of the joy of my writing process is to release the reins on law and order.
